Home Renovation

Your new home starts here

I came across this useful and handy article for renovating homes. Here it talks about redoing your kitchen easily and cost-effective.

“Giving a face-lift to your kitchen doesn’t have to send you into a spiral of debt; plan your kitchen remodel with care and you’ll save big bucks. Here are six tips:

1. Paint your cabinets — A typical cabinetry refinishing job will run between $4,000 and $6,000. Even if you have never sanded or painted a thing in your life, it’s really not that hard to learn. Giving a fresh stain or coat of paint to your cabinets will immediately transform the look of your kitchen.

2. Change hardware — Look for hardware at garage sales, estate auctions and hardware stores. Cost ranges wildly from $1.50 per pull to $8 for the high-end variety. Remove the existing hardware first to see the area under each knob. Make sure your new hardware fits the spaces in your cabinet doors.

3. Replace your sink and/or faucet — For just $100, you can drastically update your drab kitchen. A sleek, elegant faucet and new sink breathes new life into a dated space. Check surplus stores for discontinued hardware and sinks.

4. Lay your own tile — Keep an eye out for killer deals on tile and snatch up several pallets when they go on sale. You might want to consider hiring help to remove the current tile and prep the floor. It is vital that your surface is smooth and level before you lay your new tile.

5. Attend a local class — Mosey over to your local Home Depot or Lowe’s for weekly seminars. They offer classes on how to lay tile, install interior lighting, prep surfaces or install doors. These classes are free and provide materials and demonstrations. Skilled professionals at the store also offer follow up for your project.

6. Swap skills — We are not suggesting bartering here. That is a taxable offense. Think of it as people helping people. If you have the tools and skills to install a counter top, help out your friend across town and invite him to refinish your cabinets. Or include skills outside of remodeling — baby-sit their kids for a couple of months in exchange for newly installed floor tile. No receipts necessary for neighborly honey-dos.

Take your time and enjoy the remodeling ride. Doing most of the work yourself will boost your confidence and the look of your kitchen.”
